Verizon Rumored to Try Inking an iPhone Deal

We already reported before that Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg stated in an interview that the company planned to add an iPhone to its lineup, and not just any iPhone, but one that would work on its upcoming 4G networks, and now we learn that Verizon and Apple are indeed in talks for the launch

Is the i7500 the first Samsung Android device?

The German web site Bild.de reports information on the Samsung i7500 they have recently received. The device, says the report, is expected to be Samsung's first phone using Google's open source OS and is heading for a June release for O2 in Europe. This scotches previous rumors that the S8000 would be the Korean manufacturer's first Android release. The i7500 handset is expected to offer 3G connectivity, feature a capacitive 3.2-inch OLED touchscreen with HVGA (480x320) resolution, Wi-Fi, GPS, a 5MP camera with flash, 8GB of memory expandable with a microSD slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The smartphone will be powered by Android 1.5 with all the lovely goodies from the Cupcake upgrade. The expected price of the gadget is 300 Euros (about $400 US). Although the pictures show the standard Android interface known from the G1, we hope the guys at Samsung have personalized the OS. Unfortunately, there is no word on its availability in the U.S.

Samsung I7500 officially runs Android OS

Samsung haven´t held off much announcing and confirming the rumor, eh? It is now clear that the Samsung I7500 is indeed the company’s first handset to be run Google’s Android operating system. So, what do we know about this one? Actually, pretty much what we need – pictures show that the I7500 is a candybar that only has the basic set of hardware keys needed for the Android OS so as there is more space to fit the large, 3.2-inch touch-sensitive 320x480 pixel resolution AMOLED screen. It seems the user interface has not been customized in any way, maybe because this is the first attempt of the manufacturer at this particulr OS, so Samsung´s decision to stick to the original outlook may indeed prove a wise one... We
like it anyway. The Samsung I7500 also features a 5-megapixel, LED flash autofocus camera, of course (seems it´s not a double LED one though).

Of course, as an Android device, the I7500 supports Google's various services, such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Maps with support for Google Latitude, Street View, and more.

The I7500 is more similar in design to the HTC Magic, rather than the T-Mobile G1, in that it features a candy bar-style form factor and doesn't include a physical keyboard. The Samsung I7500 measures 4.5 inches tall by 2.2 inches wide by 0.4 inch thick. It appears that Russian site Mobile-review.com got some hands-on photos of the smartphone, which you can check out here.

In other Android news, it looks like G1 owners in Germany will be the first to get the Android 1.5 software update (aka Cupcake). According to Android Guys and T-Mobile Germany, the update will be available in May, bringing such enhancements as video recording, stereo Bluetooth, an onscreen keyboard, and more.

Once again, we have no word on when the update might be pushed out to other G1 owners around the world, but the fact it's ready for release in Germany is good news. Hopefully, the States won't be too far behind.

HTC Magic launched by Vodafone Spain

Who would have thought the HTC Magic would come out in Spain that early? Probably nobody, but brace yourself, Vodafone Spain has now become the first carrier in the world to launch the Android-powered Magic. The much-anticipated handset is only available on a special Internet data plan of Euro 19 per month. Among the highlights here are (naturally) the Android OS and a bunch of services powered by Google (Market, Maps, YouTube, Navigator, etc). When it comes to hardware might, the Magic features large 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, Wi-Fi and quad-band 3.5G support. Congrats, amigos!

Metal Gear Solid Touch for iPhone finally released in full

here we go, the only thing in the iPhone’s lifespan so far that’s ever made me jealous of Apple users. Ever since it was announced, I’ve been plotting Dan’s imminent and messy downfall for getting to play a version of Metal Gear Solid 4, before me…

Yes, I’m talking about, of course, Metal Gear Solid Touch for the iPhone, because now, according to IntoMobile, it’s been given its full release, and the complete and whole game is ready to be played and downloaded.

However, needless to say, it’s not going to have the same gameplay mechanics or stunning visuals of the PS3 version (but then, real life often can’t replicate how good PS3 visuals are), but what you get instead, if you’re an iPhone owner, is 20 levels of what amounts to pointing and shooting action.

Basically, it sounds like Konami have taken the Metal Gear Solid experience, and shoehorned it into a much simpler gameplay concept, to make it work on a phone. So, it’s a tappy pointy shooter, set in the MGS universe, that follows the story of MGS 4 very closely, and stars ol’ grumpy-drawers himself?

Now, what I want to know is when they’re going to make versions for other phones. Windows Mobile’d easily be powerful enough to run it, from what I’ve seen of the visuals. And yes, I’m thinking Toshiba TG01 at this point, since it actually has 3D acceleration, as well as a 1GHz processor and a 4.1 inch screen.

The Orange Vegas - cheapest touchscreen phone in the world?

t’s well-known that in 2009, touchscreen phones are taking over the world. Big ones, small ones, ultra-powerful ones, more fashion-conscious, slim ones. But up till now, there’s never really been what you’d call a super-cheap touchscreen phone. Well, I say up till now, because according to the Boy Genius Report, there now is one: the Orange Vegas.

Hehe, you have to titter at them naming a credit-crunch-busting touchy-phone after most the famous gambling city on the planet…

Still, despite the irony of the name, there’s a lot to really love about the Orange Vegas. Starting with the interface, since that’s all the rage on modern phones, well… ok, granted, it’s not going to worry something like the Palm Pre in any way, shape or form, but it is designed to be simple and chic. The UI on the Orange Vegas is said to have been built specially for Orange, and I believe that claim since, well, I really can’t identify what the hell it’s running on. It doesn’t look to be Symbian, Windows Mobile, or Android, which doesn’t leave many options left. Maybe Linux, I suppose, but I’m really dying to find out.

Now, the other specs aren’t that brilliant. You get a 1.3 megapixel camera (so, no Sony Ericsson Idou, either, then), and GPRS (what, not even 3G?), although you do get Bluetooth, and a memory card slot that’ll take up to 4Gb cards.

But then, none of that matters, because just you wait till you see the price. On pay as you go (and bear in mind, this is without contract subsidies, and it’s a touchscreen phone, for god’s sake), the Orange Vegas costs just £48.50!

Sweet zombie jeebus, how in the name of all that’s holy can they even afford to make it??? Ok, granted, it doesn’t even come close to being as powerful as my X1, but consider that my X1 cost about TEN TIMES AS MUCH, sim-free, when it was launched.

Sharp make the world’s first solar-powered, waterproof phone

You have to admire the Japanese. Not only are they one of the coolest nationalities on the planet, but they also make some of the most advanced gear ever seen by man. Playstation, Wii, Aibo, Nissan GT-R… All of them came from the land of the rising sun. However, they also have a penchant for making waterproof phones, for some reason (maybe they use the phone in the bath a lot?), and now Sharp have gone one step further, to create the world’s first solar-powered waterproof phone, according to Fast Company.

It seems as though the solar charger in it is a bit efficient, as well…

It’s being reported that just 10 minutes in the sun will give the phone enough juice for a minute-long call, or 2 hours of standby time. Now, granted, that ain’t gonna be enough to save someone’s life, but if you’re lounging on the beach, it’d be perfect.

Of course, being waterproof’s going to help there, although I’m at a loss as to how they waterproof it. It’s quite clearly not been rubberised or ruggedised, so maybe it’s some kind of nano-plasma-coating-type-thing. Either way, since it’s Japanese, you can guarantee it’ll be sci-fi.

Now the bad news… the chances of this appearing in the UK is about the same as me winning the Grand National, without a horse. Of course, we might not have much use for the solar-charging bit (although it was really sunny, today), but the waterproofing could be useful, given that our rainy season has lasted since about the 15th Century…

Aye, the Japanese seem to get all the good gear. It’s even rumoured that the sensors in their Cyber-Shot camera phones are better than ours. Well, at least until the Sony Ericsson Idou comes along. Then we’ll show ‘em who’s boss…

Sony Ericsson Android rumours - will they or won’t they?

Over the last couple of days, some new rumours have popped up about Sony Ericsson’s plans for getting an Android handset out into the wild. Unusually, though, the rumours don’t agree with each other. In fact, they flat out contradict each other! The first came when the CEO of the big mobile magnate said that it’s unlikely we’d see a Sony Ericsson Android phone before the end of 2009.

Now, however, it’s being reported by Engadget Mobile that Orange are going to be getting Sony Ericsson Android phones before the end of the year.

So, which one’s correct?

The second, more recent rumour goes on to say that Sony Ericsson actually plan on outsourcing the actual building of their Android phones to a separate company called Foxconn. Now, that’s not as far-fetched as it might sound, given that they outsourced the production of the Sony Ericsson X1 to HTC. Oh, and given rumours they want to split from HTC for their Windows Mobile phones, it seems sensible that they’d also not use HTC for their Android phones.

There’s no confirmation whether the rumour’s accurate, but if true, we should expect to see Sony Ericsson get their Android phones out there before, as the Americans call it, the holiday season.

T-Mobile USA Makes Push Into Growing Embedded Devices Market

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--T-Mobile USA on Thursday unveiled an embedded SIM module for machines to help them connect to its cellular network as it looks to tap the growing embedded devices market.

With more than four out of every five consumers owning a cellphone, the wireless carriers are looking for places beyond the cellphone to connect. The carriers have sung the praises for connecting multiple devices, and T-Mobile USA is the latest to join the chorus. Nearly 20 million devices will have a cellular connection by 2012, according to Yankee Group.

The nation's fourth-largest wireless carrier - a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG (DT) - claims its embedded SIM module makes it easier and cheaper to connect devices, which the company feels gives it an edge.

Second Google phone coming to Vodafone next month

Casual Gaming Writes: Despite a slight delay, the second mobile smartphone boasting Google's Android OS is to hit the UK next month when the HTC Magic arrives on the Vodafone network.

The device had previously been expected to arrive this month, but Vodafone is now accepting orders for the unit with the aim of having them with customers by May 5th.

The phone does away with the pop out QWERTY keyboard of its predecessor, the T-Mobile G1, and instead opts for a touch-screen only approach. It also packs GPS, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a 3.2" screen as well as HSDPA, Bluetooth and wi-fi connectivity.

A lot of people swear by the JCB Tough Phone (unless they drop it on their toe, then they swear at it), but its makers, Sonim, haven’t been sitting on their hands since it came out. They’ve already followed it up with the Sonim XP3, an even tougher phone, that’s fully waterproof.

It doesn’t even stop there, though, because we’ve now got pics of their next, and as reported way back when, on this very blog, it’s a Land Rover badged-phone.

Disappointingly, though, it’s not British Racing Green…

The eagle-eyed among you will notice that it looks pretty much the same as the XP3. In fact, from the front, it looks so much like the XP3, that one would immediately say, “Ooh, look an XP3.”

New Linux phones to be announced on Monday?

Software’s becoming the big battleground for mobile phones, especially when you’re talking smartphones. There’s Android, there’s Windows Mobile, there’s Symbian, there’ll soon be WebOS… and there’s one I haven’t talked about much, but that could easily be as important as the other big names in the OS world…

Linux.

According to Reuters, we should be seeing some brand new Linux-powered phones from the LiMo Foundation on Monday. And not just from the phone manufacturers you never hear about, like NEC and Panasonic, but from two of the big five manufacturers. Yup, LG and Samsung are all set, if the story is correct, to unveil their own LiMo-powered phones to the world.

High-end companion to the Sony Ericsson Idou to be announed in May

Anybody who’s read this blog since the Mobile World Congress will know that I’ve basically been squee-ing myself silly over the Sony Ericsson Idou, because, frankly, it’s awesome. It’s also the first phone in their new ‘Entertainment Unlimited’ range, that combines all the best stuff in one phone. However, surely we all knew that a phone range can’t be made with just one handset… and so, according to Sony Ericsson’s very own press release, the Idou is going to be getting a new ‘Entertainment Unlimited’ phone to keep it company!

Ok, granted, the press release is actually about their financial performance, which has been bad so far this year, just like every other phone manufacturer’s, but the important bit is that there’s a new high-ender on the way.

The question is, what form will this phone take? Will it be another touchscreen monster like the Sony Ericsson Idou? Or will it be something more traditional, akin to the Sony Ericsson W995?

LG Viewty Smart goes official, looks jaw-dropping

After the little mishap over at LG last week, the successor to the Viewty has now gone official, and courtesy of LG’s official press release, we finally know the real name for it.

And it ain’t Viewty II…

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the LG Viewty Smart. And I’m pleased to report that, as you can see for yourself, it looks bleedin’ lovely! But then, that’s no surprise, really, as LG have a reputation for making damn sexy phones. I mean, just take a look at the first incarnation of the LG Viewty. It looked awesome, and it holds the place as the only phone that’s ever really come close to tempting me away from Sony Ericsson.

It was just that nice.

Release dates revealed - Nokia N97, HTC Magic and Windows Mobile 6.5

A whole slew of release dates have popped up online over the weekend, thanks to the Boy Genius Report, and over the course of the next couple of months we’ve got some exciting stuff to look forward to!

First up, arriving on May 5th, we’ve got the second official Android phone, the HTC Magic, which takes the Android formula laid down by the T-Mobile G1 and takes the keyboard away. It’s a touchscreen-only device, running a new onscreen keyboard, but it still comes with all the good bits you get on the G1, namely the Android Marketplace, sleek gesture controls, and really tight integration with Google’s services.

Software developers as excited about Palm Pre as we are?

The big talking point in mobile phones, for the last few months, has been the Palm Pre, with a lot of people getting very excited about its impending launch. Now, one of the things that Palm promised is that the Pre will be very, very easy to create software for, and so, logically, software developers should be as excited as the rest of us about its launch, right?

Well, according to IntoMobile, they are…

What they say about WebOS (the Palm Pre’s operating system) seems pretty consistent, saying that not only is it giving them access to proper, intelligent multitasking, making for complex apps, but it’s one of the few ‘future-oriented’ phones out there, not being a mindless rip-off of a certain fruit-based touch phone (no, not Blackberry, the other one).

Sony Ericsson says there is still "time to go" before it launches an Android phone

Sony Ericsson says it will release an Android powered cellphone, but it will take time before such a handset is launched. CEO Hideki Komiyama told Reuters that offering a device with the Google open source OS takes time for testing, evaluation and consumer acceptance. While many other cellphone manufacturers are rushing out Android backed models, Komiyama said that Sony Ericsson is focusing on how it can make units that are different than those of its competition despite sharing the same OS. That goal also applies to high-end phones that the partnership is making with Windows Mobile and Symbian software. Mr. Komiyama said that Sony Ericsson has no idea when its first Android handset will be available, but we know that there are many Sony Ericsson fans out there who just can't wait.

Windows Mobile 6.5 to be launched May 11th at Tech Ed 2009

The newly updated version of Microsoft's smartphone platform, Windows Mobile 6.5, is expected to be launched May 11th at the company's Tech Ed 2009 show in L.A. This information is reported on the Windows Mobile Team Blog and says that the announcement should take place during day one of the show between 1pm and 2:15pm at a session aimed at IT professionals and developers. Once the OS is released, it will be up to the handset manufacturers to load the software onto their devices before the public gets the chance to use it.

As we previously reported, the Windows Mobile platform is currently trails Symbian and RIM in mobile OS market share. In the same article, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that Windows Mobile 7 would be out in 2010.

Vodafone is offering a new mobile broadband deal for businesses, angled at those who want to know exactly what their monthly bill will be, rather than run the risk of a small coronary when they see how much going over their data limit costs them.

Vodafone says "customer research" has shown that 5GB is "an ideal amount of data for small businesses to have at their disposal".

A "Stick Pro" USB dongle is thrown in for anyone signing their life away on 24-month plans, but the £18/5GB offer is also available on a 30-day, 12- or 18-month basis.

Motorola Rolls Out Three New Rokr Phones

Motorola has added three more vibrant music phones to its extensive selection of Rokr cell phones. All the three mobile phones, Rokr EM30, Rokr EM28 and Rokr EM25, present a range of designs and features, altogether. However, the trio has something in common i.e. high quality music. Out of the three, Rokr EM30 is the stupendous model which has a traditional candy bar design in attractive black and red color scheme. This quadband GSM handset has the same ModeShift keypad that was last seen on the Motorola Rokr E8.

The mediocre Rokr EM28 is a flip phone which comes in two triband versions, and both the models support GPRS and EDGE networks. Its remarkable music player offers 3D sound effects, spatial audio with bass boost, and an equalizer. For people who love slider phones with just basic features, Rokr EM25 is the best bet. It supports two bands, and comes with a rocking music player, an FM radio, a speakerphone, etc. According to the sources, the EM30 will first be put on sale in Taiwan, and will reach other markets along with the siblings later.

Latest mobiles 'open to attack'

The latest generation of mobile phones is vulnerable to hackers, security experts have warned.

They say loopholes in the software could allow hackers to scroll through a phone's address book by remote control and even eavesdrop on conversations.

The warning was made by organisers of an international conference on computer security in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.

The Hack in the Box conference runs until 7 October.

Delegates at the conference are to be shown a demonstration of security flaws found in the Java 2 Micro edition or J2ME software, jointly developed by Sun Microsystems, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola.

It is supplied with those companies' latest smartphones and PDA phones.

Experts say the flaw lies in the way Java tries to keep the operating system from accepting commands from outside.

I don't think people need to be too alarmed, but they should start asking their mobile operators to provide them with protection
Sal Viveros, McAfee
According to the meeting's organiser, Dylan Andrew, users could have personal information stolen or even find themselves bugged.

"The new generations of phones actually come with a lot more powerful software within the operating system," he said.

"We've actually found new attacks that affect these new platforms that allows an attacker to, for example remotely take control of your phone, maybe read your address book or even eavesdrop on a conversation."

The mobile industry is aware of these security issues, said Sal Viveros, director of wireless security at McAfee.

He told BBC News Online that the danger was not so much from malicious Java programs, but from badly written code that could have unintentional consequences.

"The risk is pretty minimal, but there is a risk out there," he said.

"I don't think people need to be too alarmed, but they should start asking their mobile operators to provide them with protection."

Fighting spam

However, there may be better news for those who are fed up with being inundated with junk e-mail.

Spam is often used to send viruses or Trojans, small programmes that allow machines to be run remotely without their owner's knowledge.

Some 750,000 computers are thought to be hijacked at any one moment.

If they are alerted to the problem, companies that provide connections to the internet will often disconnect users who send spam and viruses.

However, making complaints can be time consuming as thousands of spam e-mails are created every day.

The former hacker turned security pioneer, John Draper, is due to present details of software which he says can send complaints automatically.

"Spam is a very big issue, because it offers huge financial incentives for the creation of viruses, Trojans and other tools to spread spam," he said.

"These Trojans have to be identified and shut down.

"Spam mail is the key because we use spam as a means of identifying these infected hosts so that we can point them out to network administrators so they can shut them down."

He says the software is already helping to shut down 150,000 rogue computers each month.
